Industrial fastening covers a wide family of hardware: hex bolts and socket head cap screws for general structural joints, studs and U-bolts for mounting and clamping applications, self-tapping and drilling screws for sheet metal work, and washers (plain, spring/lock and flange) that spread load and resist loosening under vibration. Nyloc and flange nuts add extra resistance to vibration-induced loosening compared with a plain hex nut.
Steel fasteners are marked with a property class such as 4.6, 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9, standardised internationally under ISO 898-1 and referenced in India via IS 1367. The first number is roughly one-tenth of the minimum tensile strength in kgf/mm², and the second (after the decimal point) indicates the ratio of yield strength to tensile strength. In practical terms: a higher grade number means a stronger fastener, but it also typically means less ductility — so the right grade depends on the loading the joint will actually see, not simply "the strongest available."
The right fastener is a combination of three decisions: the mechanical grade for the load it will carry, the base material and coating for the environment it will sit in, and the fastener type suited to how the joint will be assembled and accessed. Getting any one of these wrong — for example, an ungalvanised grade 8.8 bolt in an outdoor coastal installation — can lead to premature corrosion or failure well before the rest of the structure needs attention.
