About this calculator
A free bolt torque and joint design calculator
Why We Included a Bolt Torque Calculation Tool on the VERCHO Website
At VERCHO Engineering Solutions, our objective is not limited to supplying electrical and mechanical products. We also aim to provide practical engineering resources that can be useful to engineers, consultants, contractors, maintenance teams and fitters.
A bolted joint is only as good as the preload in its bolts. Yet most of the torque applied to a nut never stretches the bolt at all — typically around 85–90 % is lost to friction in the thread and under the head. The same torque on a dry zinc-plated bolt, an oiled bolt and a stainless bolt with anti-seize can therefore give very different clamping forces, and the wrong value can leave a joint loose or take the bolt past yield.
Our Bolt Torque & Joint Design tool works from the bolt size, grade, finish and tightening tool to a practical wrench setting, and shows how much preload that setting really gives.
How Is This Relevant to VERCHO?
Fasteners are a core part of VERCHO's range — hex bolts, nuts, studs, socket cap screws, washers and industrial fasteners in mild steel, high-tensile grades 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9, and stainless A2 / A4. They hold together our electrical enclosures and panels, and the flanges, pipe supports and structures in the piping systems our growing range of MS & SS pipes, fittings and flanges serves.
Knowing how a bolt is tightened — and what can go wrong with finish, lubrication, grade and environment — helps us recommend the right fastener for each application, not just the right size.
What the Bolt Torque Calculator Works Out
Pick what you want to check — each check shows only the inputs it needs:
- Torque & preload — theoretical, design and a practical wrench setting rounded to what a torque wrench can be set to, with the preload scatter expected from the tool, from impact wrench to ultrasonic stretch control.
- Tension & utilisation — the preload and service load in the bolt, load factor and utilisation against yield, including thermal effects.
- Thread stripping — engagement length and stripping strength of the bolt and of the nut or tapped hole.
- Bolt group loads — tension and shear on each bolt in a rectangular, circular (PCD) or single-line pattern under axial load, eccentric shear and moment, with prying for T-stubs and end plates.
- Shear & bearing — shear, bearing and slip resistance of bearing-type and slip-resistant connections to EN 1993-1-8, with end and edge distances.
- Stiffness & fatigue — bolt and joint stiffness, load introduction, residual clamp force and fatigue for cyclic loads.
- Full joint design — every check together, plus an engineer's review of finish, hydrogen embrittlement and galvanic corrosion, the tightening sequence, tools, matching nuts and washers and a VERCHO product code for ordering.
Metric ISO, UNC and UNF bolts, studs and cap screws are covered, in grades 4.6 to 12.9, A2 / A4 stainless, SAE grades and ASTM B7 studs, with PDF and Excel export.
Why Have We Included This Tool?
VERCHO is not only a supplier of industrial products; we aim to support engineers and project teams with practical engineering resources. This Bolt Torque Calculator is provided as a convenient tool for preliminary bolted-joint calculations, helping users select the right fastener, finish and tightening method before assembly.
The calculator is intended as a preliminary engineering reference and should not be considered a substitute for detailed design, manufacturer data or project-specific engineering calculations.
At VERCHO, we believe that product knowledge and engineering understanding should go together. We aim to continue developing useful technical resources alongside our growing range of electrical and mechanical products.
VERCHO — BUILT BEYOND.
