About this calculator

A free metal weight calculator for fabrication, piping and structures

Why We Included a Weight Calculation Tool on the VERCHO Website

At VERCHO Engineering Solutions, our objective is not limited to supplying electrical and mechanical products. We also aim to provide practical engineering resources that can be useful to engineers, consultants, contractors, estimators, fabricators and purchase teams.

Almost every early decision on a project depends on weight. Material cost is quoted per kilogram, freight and handling are planned by the tonne, cranes and lifting gear are chosen by load, and a structure or support has to carry the weight of the equipment, pipes and fluid on it. A small error in a weight estimate carries straight through to the BOQ, the purchase order and the site.

Our Metal Weight Calculation Tool works out weight = volume × density for the shapes engineers use every day, and lets you build a complete weight list for a quick material take-off.

How Is This Relevant to VERCHO?

Weight is at the heart of what VERCHO makes and supplies. Our electrical enclosures and panels are built from CRCA, galvanised and stainless steel sheet — and the sheet metal fabrication behind them is estimated sheet by sheet and gauge by gauge. The same applies to the base frames, mounting plates, gland plates and channels that go with them.

Our growing range of MS & SS pipes, pipe fittings and flanges is bought, stocked and transported by weight per metre, and the structures that support them use ISMB beams, ISMC channels and angles. Fasteners, nut bolts and washers are sold by weight too. Knowing the weight of each item helps us quote accurately, plan dispatch and recommend the right material and thickness for the job — not just the cheapest one.

What the Weight Calculator Works Out

  • Plate and sheet — flat sheets and plates from 0.5 to 12 mm and SWG gauges, circular plates and rings, perforated sheet by open area, trapezoid plates and complete coils with approximate strip length.
  • Bars and rods — round, square, flat, hexagon and octagon bars, with weight per metre and section area.
  • Pipes and tubes — MS & SS pipes to IS 1239 (medium and heavy) and ASME B36.10 Sch 40 / Sch 80, plus SHS and RHS hollow sections, with inside diameter and the weight of the pipe full of water for hydrotest and support loads.
  • Rolled steel sections — ISMB beams, ISMC channels and equal and unequal ISA angles, using IS 808 nominal masses.
  • Built-up sections — welded I-sections, channels and T-sections made from plates.
  • Custom shapes — blocks, cylinders, bushes, spheres, hemispherical heads, cones, frustums, cone shells and hoppers, gussets and rings.
  • 40+ materials — mild and alloy steel, SS 304, 316, 310, 410, 430 and duplex, aluminium, copper, brass, bronze, titanium, plastics, concrete and more, with an editable density for anything else.
  • Weight list — add each part with its quantity and item mark, enter a rate per kg to see material cost, switch between metric and imperial inputs, and download the schedule as a formatted Excel workbook or PDF.

Where the Weight Calculator Helps

Typical uses include estimating the steel in an enclosure or panel, preparing a BOQ or material take-off for a pipe rack or platform, checking the weight per metre of a pipe before designing its supports, comparing mild steel with stainless steel or aluminium for the same part, and planning freight, handling and lifting for fabricated assemblies.

Why Have We Included This Tool?

VERCHO is not only a supplier of industrial products; we aim to support engineers and project teams with practical engineering resources. This Weight Calculator is provided as a convenient tool for preliminary weight and material estimates, alongside our pump head, pipe size and bolt torque calculators.

Weights are calculated from nominal dimensions and densities. Rolling tolerances, corner radii, coatings and weld metal are not included, and ISMB / ISMC values are IS 808 nominal masses. The calculator is intended as a preliminary engineering reference and should not be considered a substitute for detailed design, mill certificates, manufacturer data or project-specific engineering calculations.

At VERCHO, we believe that product knowledge and engineering understanding should go together. We aim to continue developing useful technical resources alongside our growing range of electrical and mechanical products.
