Tank Volume & Level Calculation

Pick the shape, enter the size and the rated capacity. See how full the tank is, where the 100 %, HH, H, L and LL levels sit in mm and %, and which level instruments, switches and vents the tank needs — with a dipstick chart you can print.

Top-mounted instruments start measuring a little below their flange. Flange height = top of tank at that point + nozzle height. Dead zones are typical values — type the figure from your instrument datasheet. Levels above the “highest usable level” cannot be measured or switched.

About this calculator

A tank volume calculator built around gauging

Why We Included a Tank Volume Calculation Tool on the VERCHO Website

At VERCHO Engineering Solutions, our objective is not limited to supplying electrical and mechanical products. We also aim to provide practical engineering resources that can be useful to engineers, consultants, contractors, plant operators and maintenance teams.

Almost every plant has tanks — diesel day tanks for DG sets, water and fire-water tanks, chemical, oil and process vessels. The question asked about them every day is simple: how much is in the tank? The answer is not. A dip reading in millimetres only becomes litres through the tank’s own geometry, and dished ends, cone bottoms and a slight tilt on a horizontal tank all change the answer.

Our Tank Volume Calculation Tool turns a dip, a percentage or a target volume into the other two for any common tank shape, and then helps decide where the alarms, switches, instruments and nozzles should go.

How Is This Relevant to VERCHO?

Tanks never stand alone. They are filled and emptied through MS & SS pipes, pipe fittings and flanges, bolted with industrial fasteners, and their level instruments, switches and pumps are wired back to electrical enclosures and control panels — all part of what VERCHO supplies.

Knowing the tank capacity, the working volume between alarms and the nozzle sizes for the inlet, outlet, drain and vent helps us recommend the right pipes, flanges, fasteners and panel arrangement for the job.

What the Tank Volume Calculator Works Out

  • Any tank shape — vertical and horizontal cylinders, cone-bottom silos, dished vessels with 2:1 ellipsoidal, torispherical or hemispherical heads, spheres, rectangular tanks and hoppers, oval and tapered tanks.
  • Partial-fill volume from a dip reading or a percentage, and the level for a given volume, with tilt correction for horizontal tanks.
  • Rated capacity and 100 % level — where the rated volume is reached and how much space is left above it.
  • Alarm levels — LALL, LAL, LAH and LAHH in mm, % and litres, checked against the operator response time at the fill and draw-off rates.
  • Dipstick chart and strapping table for every dip reading or volume step, downloadable as Excel or PDF.
  • Level instrument selection — radar, guided wave radar, ultrasonic, DP, displacer, capacitance, servo, magnetic gauge and sight glass ranked for the liquid and the tank, plus level switches and roof-nozzle dead zones.
  • Outlet and venting checks — vortex submergence (ANSI/HI 9.8), gravity drain time and vent sizing to API 2000 / ISO 28300.

Why Have We Included This Tool?

VERCHO is not only a supplier of industrial products; we aim to support engineers and project teams with practical engineering resources. This calculator works alongside our pump head, pipe size and pipe fittings & flanges tools.

The calculator is intended as a preliminary engineering reference and should not be considered a substitute for detailed design, manufacturer data, a certified tank calibration or project-specific engineering calculations.

At VERCHO, we believe that product knowledge and engineering understanding should go together. We aim to continue developing useful technical resources alongside our growing range of electrical and mechanical products.

VERCHO — BUILT BEYOND.
