Pipe Size & Velocity Calculation

Select the fluid, flow and service. Fluid properties, pipe roughness and sizing limits fill in automatically and can be overwritten. The tool picks the line size and checks it for erosion, surge, wall thickness, support span and static charge.

Why We Included a Pipe Size Calculation Tool on the VERCHO Website

At VERCHO Engineering Solutions, our objective is not limited to supplying electrical and mechanical products. We also aim to provide practical engineering resources that can be useful to engineers, consultants, contractors and project teams.

Choosing a pipe size is one of the first decisions in any piping system, and one of the most important. The diameter decides the flow velocity, the friction loss, the noise and erosion in the line, the surge when a valve closes and ultimately the head the pump must deliver. A line that is too small wastes energy and wears quickly; a line that is too large adds cost, weight and support loads without any benefit.

Our Pipe Size Calculation Tool helps with this first step. Select the fluid, flow rate and line service — pump suction, discharge, utility header, fuel transfer, viscous oil or gravity drain — and the tool fills in typical fluid properties, pipe roughness and velocity limits, then checks every standard size in the chosen pipe series.

How Is This Relevant to VERCHO?

VERCHO's mechanical product range is expanding to include MS & SS pipes, pipe fittings and flanges, alongside our electrical enclosures and industrial fasteners. Every pipe that is specified also needs elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, gaskets and the nut bolts that hold the joints together.

The pipe series in the calculator reflect what is actually bought and installed in Indian and international projects: CS seamless to ASME B36.10 (Sch 40, STD and Sch 80), stainless steel SS 304 / 316 to ASME B36.19 (Sch 10S and 40S), MS ERW and GI to IS 1239 / IS 3589, and HDPE PE100 to IS 4984. Understanding how these sizes are selected helps us serve the engineers and buyers who specify them.

What the Pipe Size Calculator Checks

  • Recommended pipe size — the smallest standard size that meets the velocity and pressure-drop limits, with the theoretical and design inside diameter.
  • Velocity and pressure drop per 100 m, Reynolds number and flow regime, with the drop over the actual line length.
  • Erosional velocity to API RP 14E and static-charge limits for low-conductivity fuels such as diesel and petrol.
  • Wall thickness and MAWP to ASME B31.3 after mill tolerance and corrosion allowance, plus hydrotest pressure; HDPE pressure rating with temperature derating.
  • Surge (water hammer) on valve closure and maximum support spacing for the pipe full of liquid.

Straight-pipe losses are only part of the story — for the full system including fittings and valves, carry the result into our Pump Head Calculator.

Why Have We Included This Tool?

VERCHO is not only a supplier of industrial products; we aim to support engineers and project teams with practical engineering resources. This Pipe Size Calculator is provided as a convenient tool for preliminary line sizing, helping users understand system requirements before selecting pipes, fittings, flanges and associated components.

The calculator is intended as a preliminary engineering reference and should not be considered a substitute for detailed design, manufacturer data or project-specific engineering calculations.

At VERCHO, we believe that product knowledge and engineering understanding should go together. We aim to continue developing useful technical resources alongside our growing range of electrical and mechanical products.

VERCHO — BUILT BEYOND.
